Software Scalability Belgrade | #05 came and went … and amazing bunch of 70+ people showed up !

The event featured several talks by our fellow engineers:

1. “Introduction to Probabilistic Models for Bioinformatics” – Igor Bogicevic
2. “Engineering Challenges in Vertical Search Engines” – Aleksandar Bradic
3. “VastDB : nosql construction kit ” – Luka Stojanovic, Vanja Komadinovic, Aleksandar Matic

Unfortunately, by the time these were done it was already too late, so we had to push the Clojure barcamp track for the next event (or the new Clojure User Group group starting to shape up)

Software Scalability | Belgrade meetup returns … unconference-style

Following the great success of the barcamp-like track of past event, this time we kickstart the summer with the new event featuring no predetermined talks or topics

Ad hoc presentations / lightning talks should be expected in the domain of:

* Highly Scalable Software Systems
* Search
* Data Processing Platforms
* Machine Learning
* Distributed Computing
* Algorithms & Languages
* Information Visualization
* nosql/pseudo-sql/mapreduce/cloud computing/big data… and similar buzzworlds…

… or anything else that the young love …

Event will take place in the offices of Seven Bridges Genomics, Gundulicev Venac 48 (2nd floor), or (in the event of high RSVP count), in the offices of Vast.com, Trg Nikole Pasica 9, Belgrade, starting at 17:00 CET.

Due to surreal number of participants (>70 !) – we will be moving event to a different location : Vast.com, Nikole Pasica 9.

Additionally (given the reality of time/space constraints ) – we will (probably) be structuring event as two separate tracks hosting 3 main talks + potentially a number of unconference-style sessions on random topics of interest (for example : hadoop, nosql, etc.).

And finally – summer has ended with nosqlsummer | Belgrade part #2. Once again – the space was full and we had a great meetup. This time – we managed to squeeze the “official” part in in just 4 hours

Some takeaway questions from the event:

• Feasibility of autogeneration of compensating transactions from sql procedures ?
• Long-term impact of ill-posed compensations for failed Sagas & detection of inconsistencies ?
• Discussion on the “orthogonality” of Saga daemon against actual business logic execution. Can we do better ?
• “Optimality” of rational model (Codd reference). What do we assume by “optimal” in data-management ? Can we define it at all ? Can we do it if we scope it down into finite set of problem classes ?
• Use-cases for Graph Databases beyond “natural” link-graph domain ?
• A case for graph-traversal dynamic vs map/reduce batch recommendations ?
• Proper definition of “optimal” graph sharding (graph partitioning/min-cut ?)
• Implementation of distributed-sharded graph infrastructure + how do we achieve this starting from empty graph and keep maintaining shards balanced ? (dynamic relocation via adaptive adressing, hashing, cross-shard-flow measurement) ?
• anything else you might remember …

nosqlsummer | Belgrade part #1 took place today, and more than 30 people showed up. The doors opened at 4pm and event lasted all the way to 9pm. Apparently we’re unable to organize an event that lasts less than 5 hours , but we’ll try better next time .

The event was great success and super-fun, especially Marko (aka “Grandpa”) Djurovic’s lecture on Cassandra. Lots of new things, constructive discussions and good ideas.

It happened !

The first meetup took place today and amazing bunch of 25 people showed up. The doors  opened at 5pm and event lasted all the way to 10pm. We had a number of talks/lectures and overall it was a great success !
